How to Prepare for a Newborn Session | Northern New Jersey Newborn Photographer

We all know that babies grow up so quickly, which is why I chose to specialize in Newborn Photography. Newborn memories are the cutest, best memories, that make for timeless photography.

Newborn sessions usually take place 14 days or less after their birth. This is for many different reasons. Newborns sleep a lot more in the first two weeks of their birth than they do when they get older. They also don't mind being moved while they are sleeping, which makes posing a lot easier.

In addition, baby acne and flaky skin are less prevalent the first two weeks after birth, thus making their skin appear as soft as it feels.

When scheduling a newborn session, I try and schedule these for the early hours of the morning, as this is when babies are regularly asleep. Expect the session to last from 2-4 hours depending on how easily your child poses. Take this time to sit back and relax!

To prepare for newborn sessions, it is best to avoid eating or drinking anything that would upset baby's tummy. We want them to be nice and comfortable during our session. To ensure their comfortability, please keep your house about 75 degrees for in-home lifestyle sessions, as babies enjoy warm environments. For studio sessions, I will ensure the studio is nice and warm to prepare for their arrival.

It is also a good idea to give your baby a bath before the session, as this will make them even more comfortable and sleepy during our session. Right before the session begins, I will also ask you to feed the baby so their tummy is full and they fall asleep easily.

If your baby wakes up or gets hungry during our session, a pacifier is recommended even if you don't plan on using on regularly. This will calm the baby, making them more comfortable, thus making them fall asleep again.

During every photo session, safety is my number one priority. It is important to note that I will never sacrifice safety during our session to get a good photo. I am highly experienced and will ensure your child is safe at all times.

If you plan on doing a family session with your newborn, neutral colors are strongly encouraged. Neutral colors give off a calming mood, which is a good mood to achieve during such a precious session. For moms, a neutral dress or tank top will work just fine. For dad, a cream or white shirt will blend well. For boys, a white shirt with jeans are a perfect combination, as shown below. For girls, anything neutral will work. It is important to note that patterns should be avoided, as they distract from the newborn. A great example of outfit ideas for family newborn photos can be found here.
